Under 20's set for kick-off

The under 20’s will start their League campaign this Saturday 13th September with a home game against St Patricks Athletic.  The lads are competing in the South Leinster section with the top two from the group going on to the quarter-finals of the Dr. Tony O’ Neill Eircom League.

As well as St. Pats, Kildare are also competing against Shamrock Rovers, Bray Wanderers, U.C.D., Athlone Town and Longford Town for one of these top two spots.

The Thoroughbreds  preparation for the League has been very professional with the lads training every Wednesday and Friday evening as well as a training session or match every weekend. However with the bad weather over the last couple of weeks friendly matches have been hard to come by.  Matches arranged against Wexford Youths, Limerick 37 and Sporting Fingal have all fallen through due to the bad weather.

This certainly hasn’t dampened the young squad’s spirit as they are all very eager for the campaign to start.  The training has been very tough as manager Thomas ‘Cooper’ Donnelly looks to prepare them for a hard season ahead but they are all looking forward to the challenge which will hopefully start with a result this Saturday.

“Saturday’s game against St. Pat’s will definitely be a challenge” said Donnelly last night, “but we will be going into every game with the belief that we can get a result first and foremost and hopefully a win.  We know we are up against it with four of the teams being Premier League U20 sides but we have a very young squad and we see this season as experience for the lads so as next season we can hopefully reach the knock out stages of the League and go on from there”

Indeed only three of the squad will be inelegible for next season as most of them are only 17 and 18 years of age and have never competed at this level before.

The home games have been arranged for Saturday afternoons in Doctors Rd. Clane and all support for the Kildare squad will be welcome.
