Good display in Cobh yields no return

Cobh Ramblers 1-0 Kildare County

A goal from captain Alan Carey has moved Cobh Ramblers back to the top of the First Division table after this narrow but deserved win over Kildare at St Colman's Park.

Carey struck just after the hour when his well-placed free-kick beat the diving Colin Cassidy for the full-back's fifth league goal of the season.

Cobh are now two points ahead of second placed Finn Harps who travel to Monaghan United tomorrow afternoon.

Ramblers were without suspended duo Shane Barrett and John Kearney, with top scorer Davin O'Neill missing because of injury.

But they were quick out of the blocks and nearly scored after five minutes when Graham Cummins curled a 20-yard shot off the Kildare post with goalkeeper Colin Cassidy beaten.

Cobh dominated the first half with plenty of possession without creating too many clear cut chances, whilst the nearest Kildare came to scoring before the break was a shot from Cathal Brady that went wide of James McCarthy's goal.

Stephen Henderson's side continued to push forward after the break with Kieran O'Reilly shooting into the side-netting and Carey had his shot cleared off the line.

The break through finally came with a brilliantly struck free-kick from Carey after 62 minutes.

Michael Mulconry was fouled a few yards outside the penalty area and captain Carey curled the ball around the wall and into the bottom corner of the Kildare net past the diving Cassidy.

The home side tried to add to their lead goal with Michael O'Shea's shot saved by the diving Cassidy, with substitute Kerins also denied by the visiting goalkeeper.

The victory was Ramblers fourth of the season over John Ryan's visitors and the twelve points gained against Kildare could yet help them into the Premier Division.
